Self-Care Corner: The Joy of Outside

As Olivia writes in her blog, asking “the question” can be difficult. This is especially true if the person we are asking is someone we care about. As someone who has had that role a few times in my life, I know it can be scary and depleting. For me, one of the wellness practices I have during those times is to re-connect with nature. Nature offers me a sense of awe – of being a part of something bigger than myself. It offers moments of joy or surprise – it reminds me that I am interconnected to everything around me; including the person I’m supporting. Sometimes nature astounds us – it overwhelms. Seeing the Grand Canyon or glaciers in Alaska for the first time comes to mind. But that awe is also in small moments that just feel special.

This spring I was walking my dog Rosie in the forest and we came upon a doe who had just given birth. We watched in amazement as the fawn tried to stand for the first time. I confess, I didn’t want to go out that morning. It was chilly and drizzling. But if I had stayed inside with my coffee the way I had wanted, I never would have seen that special moment unfold. Since that morning, that moment has gotten me through some real challenges. I think about it nearly every day and it never fails to make me smile. So if you are helping someone who is going through difficult things – don’t forget to go outside! You may be surprised by what nature will offer to help you feel supported too.
